Lamp Of Life

Lamp of life is a website of Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Chandigarh founded on 7 th April 2012 with a view of creating an awareness regarding organ donation. It is a PGIMER Chandigarh initiative to promote organ donation to fill the discrepancy between organ demand and supply. Online and offline pledging was introduced through our website. Since then there is a remarkable increase in organ donation at PGIMER which has taken this initiative to new heights and this program is progressing with leaps and bounds.

Mission Statement

  • IEC activities to promote organ donation
  • To reduce the number of people awaiting transplant.
  • To manage and promote the organ donation program at national and institutional level.
  • To improve the cadaveric organ donations at PGIMER Chandigarh.
  • To educate and motivate the general public regarding organ donation.

The noble cause of organ donation is one which must be inculcated at a young age to ensure that future generations propagate it further. Doing just that is our youngest motivator for organ donation, Akshit Chhabra. Gaining inspiration from the PGI emergency itself, Akshit has motivated more than a thousand people to pledge their organs. He has worked in close tandem with PGI’s own team to learn about the present state of organ donation in India. He has gone on to give presentations and lectures at Strawberry Fields High School, where he currently studies in class 11 and at the Patiala Military Station. Further, he has created several social media pages and his own website, to spread awareness. By giving interviews to India TV and All India Radio, he has made sure that his voice of concern reaches the masses. He now plans to bring his campaign to a national level and motivate as many people as he can towards this worthy cause.

H S Brar

Harsimrat Singh Brar, 45 years, working as Superintendent, Customs, Central Excise &Service Tax at Chandigarh. He started off as a voluntary blood donor from college days and used to donate blood intermittently. In 2012, joined a group of colleagues who planned to organise a blood donation camp in my office which, later on, became an annual feature. After of couple of years the other organisers got transferred and took the responsibility to organise the blood donation camps. In 2015, met Dr. R. K. Dhiman, HOD, Hepatology and requested him to conduct a lecture on organ donation in our office. His lecture made us aware of the acute paucity of organs which annually leads to deaths of lakhs of patients and the easy solution which lies in ‘cadaver organ donation’ which could result in avoiding almost all such deaths. That day, fifteen people came forward to pledge to donate their organs. On discussing the matter at home, his wife and son also decided to pledge their organs. He started educating/motivating my colleagues to pledge to donate their organs, more than one hundred of whom have taken the pledge. Last year, he decided to do more and have started participating in the organ donation awareness camps being organised by ROTTO. He is also attending blood donation camps organised by Blood Bank, PGI where he, along with his son Jujhar Singh Brar, act as a volunteer for the blood donation camp and also educate/motivate people visiting the camp to be aware/pledge to donate their organs. Motivated more than 500 people to come forward to pledge to donate their organs over the past two years.
